Decentring Nation: The New Geography of Urban and Regional Development in Indonesia

Decentring Nation: The New Geography of Urban and Regional Development in Indonesia was funded by the British Academy (Association of South East Asian Studies).

Overview

Indonesia represents the world's largest experiment with government decentralisation - major powers and competencies having been decentralised primarily to the city and district scale. As such it provides an amazing laboratory in which to observe policy innovation and learning.

Together with colleagues Tim Bunnell and Michelle Miller at National University of Singapore, this project will look at urban policy innovation in Gorontalo and Jembrana Indonesia as two regions that are widely regarded as being innovative and effective in developing new local government policies and administrative apparatus.

Together with previous research with examined the cases of Aceh, Batam, Sragen, Solo, Yogyakarta, Jakarta this research will provide good coverage of some of the most celebrated examples of policy innovation and promulgation in Indonesia.
