Big data, GIS & data analysis

The analysis of large datasets is central to our research. We have a wide range of expertise in the:

  • coordination of data analysis projects of high analytical complexity;
  • the statistical analysis of large building stock survey databases; and
  • the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), such as Ordnance Survey datasets and other mapping tools.

We also have access to the Household Energy Efficiency Database (HEED) data framework, which contains information on approximately 13 million dwellings. Our researchers are pioneering the development of integrated multi-variable built environment data frameworks, for example:

Morbidity and mortality data
We’ve collaborated with epidemiologists at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to develop large-scale geo-referenced morbidity and mortality data with built environment information. It offers valuable insights into combined effects, such as the:

  • health co-benefits of greenhouse gas reduction policies in cities in Europe, China and India (PURGE);
  • monetisation of the health impact associated with energy efficiency changes in dwellings in the UK (HIDEEM); and
  • modifying effect of the building fabric to outdoor pollution and excess temperatures (AWESOME).

High-resolution GIS maps of the London heat island - LUCID
By providing high-resolution GIS maps of the London heat island (LUCID), we’re contributing to the identification of heat wave vulnerability ‘hotspots’ across the Greater London Area. See the LUCID website for more details.

Non-domestic building energy consumption database - CarbonBuzz
We’ve been involved in developing and managing a large database of non-domestic building energy consumption. The sample provides a platform to benchmark and track project energy use from design to operation. See the CarbonBuzz website  for more information

Display Energy Certificate Database
We have access to a database containing 120,000 Display Energy Certificate records for more than 46,000 public buildings, which are analysed by our EngD Research Engineers.

School indoor air quality database - SINPHONIE
We have also contributed to the development of a large-scale European school indoor air quality database across 25 countries, which assesses the effect of indoor environmental quality on the health of primary school children (SINPHONIE).
