UCL Philosophy graduate puts fundraising back in the hands of good causes

UCL graduate Chester Mojay-Sinclare has developed technology that allows charities to fundraise through their own sites, rather than third party ones.

Third-party sites such as JustGiving have certain limitations when it comes to fundraising, in that charities don’t own the data on their own donors. This mean they aren’t able to establish meaningful and long-term relationships with those who give to the charity.

Chester Mojay-Sinclare (Philosophy, 2011) was keen to address this issue. So, after taking part in many entrepreneurship activities at UCL, as soon as he graduated he set up his own business.

Enthuse (previously called CharityCheckout) is a 'technology for good' business that's challenging the status quo in online fundraising.

Chester found that 46% of people didn’t remember which charity they gave to when they last sponsored a friend online. In effect, they have a relationship with the platform they donate through, and the friend they’re sponsoring, while the charity itself becomes overshadowed.

But now, thanks to Enthuse’s technology, charities can raise funds through their own sites, under their own brands. It puts the control firmly back in the hands of charities and has been proven to raise more money for their causes than third-party sites do.

Since the business launched in 2012, the platform has raised more than £70 million for charities, with millions of pounds raised every month.

"We want to revolutionise the way charities fundraise online. That’s ultimately the goal and what we’re all striving for. I turned up at UCL showing an interest in entrepreneurship and business, and found people who were passionate and encouraging. That was the perfect storm for me to be able to develop my ideas and get somewhere with them,” said Chester.
