MSc Careers

Where can an MSc in the Conservation of Contemporary Art and Media take you?

The MSc is a vocational degree for those who are interested in pursuing a career in the conservation of contemporary art, design and media. This might lead to a career in a museum, cultural heritage institution, arts non-profit organisation, artist’s studio or private conservation practice. Some students may also go into associated fields such as collection or gallery management, registration, digital preservation and heritage management. The programme will also provide a firm foundation for those interested in undertaking doctoral research.

UCL Careers fair in the Cloisters

Hands on object-based studio work is core to the programme and complements the learning which will be delivered as part of the specialised training in the conservation of sculpture, installation, conceptual, mixed media, digital, performance and time-based media works of art, based on a firm understanding of contemporary conservation theory and ethics.

Debate, small group seminars and tutorials provide you with strong presentation and negotiation skills for your future career. Project-based work will help you learn how to collaborate, manage your time and workload effectively, while developing your competency in working independently – skills highly-prized by employers. The programme offers a dedicated module on communicating conservation, something which is an increasingly important aspect of professional practice.

By learning with professionals and specialist practitioners from within the sector, you will gain knowledge of a range of career pathways and possibilities for further networking. There are many additional activities available, both within the department and the wider UCL community, to help you focus on employability skills whilst you are here.
