Professor Kevin Middlebrook and Dr Tony McCulloch

Drawing on international relations theories of hegemonic behaviour and power transition, my PhD thesis examined the notion that the United States is undergoing at least relative decline in Latin America. I employ a comparative case study to analyse the impact on the role and influence of the United States resulting from general efforts of Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela to diversify their foreign ties, for instance by intensifying relations with the People's Republic of China and the Islamic Republic of Iran. A long perspective (1823-today) will help identify shifts in Washington's role and interests in the Western hemisphere, although the main focus of this study is on the post-Cold War period. My research is supported by the Klaus Murmann Doctoral Fellowship Programme of the Foundation of German Business (sdw).
