About the Project:
YUCAN champions the rights and well-being of young carers in East London. Driven by youth and lived experiences, we are committed to ensuring that all young carers, especially those from under-resourced and minority ethnic communities, are recognised and supported through 1:1 mentoring, workshops, friendship, homework support, and respite opportunities.
We envision a society that acknowledges both the strength and vulnerability of young carers, fostering a nurturing environment through changes in law and policy. Our mission revolves around the robust assistance and appreciation of these young individuals, paving the way for their future.
How does it work?
We are actively seeking dedicated student volunteers, who can offer support and guidance in a young carer’s life through our YUCAN Mentoring Programme. As a volunteer, you will work in-person at various schools to provide 30-60 minutes of invaluable mentoring support to young carers every week.
What we are looking for:
We seek passionate individuals who are ready to make a difference. Volunteers will aim to support young carers in managing their caring responsibilities and improve their overall well-bring during their school day. Mentors will provide guidance, support, a listening ear to young carers. They will also assist in offering 1:1 fun project co-designing, reading support, arts and craft, advocacy, and confidence-building activities.
Time Commitment:
Approximately 1 hour every week from November 2024 to March 2025 (excluding Christmas break and half terms) to support young carers.
Training and Qualification:
Selected candidates will undergo comprehensive induction training covering the areas of law involved in the advocacy, essentials such as safeguarding and GDPR, advocacy role play and multidisciplinary training from the other team members. You will also be required to undergo Enhanced DBS checks.
