About the Renewal Programme:
The Newham Community Renewal Programme is a registered charity based in Newham, East London. They work with the community in Newham to change lives through advocacy, education, temporary accommodation and a wide range of positive activities. In addition to providing support with housing, education, and training, they are also responsible for running the Newham Carers' Network and the Refugee and Migrant Project. Their services are used by over 5,000 people a year who are facing challenges in their life because they might be a carer, a migrant or refugee, homeless, or unable to communicate because English isn't a language they know.
About the Role:
The Renewal Programme is looking for a Volunteer Casework Adviser to support their Refugee and Migrant Project.
You may be asked to help with
- Assessing clients’ needs – meeting with them and establishing their needs in regard to health, housing, and identifying relevant referral routes (e.g. signposting to other sources of support, referring to legal and other advisers)
- Recording information about clients on the electronic record – ensuring accuracy and completeness and following The Renewal Programme policies regarding confidentiality and data security.
- Working with clients to capture their experience for the purposes of demonstrating the outcomes the service achieves.
- Supporting with the capture and analysis of data relating to the service, such as number of clients, referrals made, etc.
- Supporting other work as required, such as the operation of the weekly foodbank or planned events and outings
What skills, knowledge and experience they are looking for:
- Whilst you are not required to have casework experience for this role, it is an advantage.
- Volunteer will have an appreciation of the experience, challenges and issues faced by migrant, refugees and asylum seekers or will willing to learn.
- Competent in using IT including Microsoft outlook (calendar and email), word and excel
- Good communication skills – able to speak and write clearly in English. Knowledge of other languages and cultures is an advantage.
- Willingness to work in accordance with The Renewal Programme Values which work towards supporting clients to achieve the skills and goals and equipped to cope with challenges themselves in future.
- Good ability to listen to others without judgement, and to use empathy and supportive questions to establish client’s needs and situation. Record the information accurately and objectively.
- Be willing to learn about services and support available at The Renewal Programme and elsewhere and confidently make referrals to other organisations.
- Be able to manage own time and work within a team and supervised setting, have the initiative to ask for help when required.
Time Commitment and Schedule:
Given the nature of the work, they are looking for someone who can dedicate 5-10 hours per week (1-2 days per week) for a minimum of 22 weeks (approximately 5-6 months).
