Conor Courtney, 23, triumphed against law students and trainees from all over the UK to be named as one of 10 finalists for National Accident Helpline’s Future Legal Mind Award 2020.

The competition has been running for six years and past winners have become respected barristers and solicitors.

Conor, who is from Dublin, is studying for a Masters degree in International Commercial Law at UCL and aspires to become a solicitor.

Conor said: “It is such an honour to be shortlisted. I remember seeing the award when I completed my LLB and seeing how dedicated all of the Future Legal Mind winners were really drove me to commit fully to all of my studies.

“I hope that me being named as a finalist might inspire other future legal minds.”

To enter Future Legal Mind, law students and trainees were asked to write an essay about their legal passions and the areas of law which they would like to see changed.

In his essay, Conor focused on his passion for pro bono work and called for a pro bono requirement to be added to law qualifications.

He is currently a volunteer at the Chelsea Citizens Advice Bureau and the UCL Rare Dementia Legal Advice Clinic, and hopes to continue with pro bono work as his career progresses.

Each of the Future Legal Mind finalists has recorded a video explaining why they should be named as the winner - to watch Conor’s video, visit www.national-accident-helpline.co.uk/future-legal-mind.

Tom Fitzgerald, Managing Director of National Accident Helpline, said: “Conor’s passion for the law and his desire to continue pursuing pro bono work was clear to us from his competition essay and video.

“We wish him the best of luck for the final.”

Conor will find out in June if he is the winner of Future Legal Mind. The winner will receive a £2,000 prize fund and will be mentored by experienced lawyers.
