Joint Enterprise Not Guilty By Association

Applications for this opportunity are now closed.

About the Project
Joint Enterprise Not Guilty by Association (JENGbA) is a grassroots campaign run by volunteers. We work to challenge the Joint Enterprise doctrine, whereby English common law allows multiple individuals to be convicted of a crime, such as murder, even if they did not personally carry out the violent act, and so long as it can be proven that individuals were in some way “in it together” with the person who did.

JENGbA seeks to draw attention to cases where individuals have been convicted under the Joint Enterprise doctrine, arguing for those convictions to be reviewed and potentially overturned. We collaborate with academics, lawyers, and other organisations to bring legal challenges, raise public awareness campaigns, and advocate for legal change to the law.

What we are looking for:
We are actively seeking 2-3 dedicated student volunteers, who can offer support to the JENGbA team. Currently we are looking for students to fulfil two roles:

  1. Research and Legal Advocacy – This volunteer will look into legal advocacy work carried out by the JENGbA team and will also assist with tracking MPs voting records.
  2. Policy Campaigning – This volunteer will compile stories of prisoners told from for the perspectives of the prisoners themselves. These will be used for online purposes and for policy-makers and government officials. This role will involve both data collection and research tasks.

Time Commitment:
Approximately 1 day a week.

Training and Qualification:
Volunteers will receive access to a comprehensive online lecture series that explains key legal concepts before undertaking casework. Selected candidates will also undergo comprehensive induction training covering the areas of law involved in the advocacy, essentials such as safeguarding and GDPR, advocacy role play and multidisciplinary training from the other team members.
