Islamophobia Response Unit Internship

Applications for this opportunity are now open.

About the Project
The Islamophobia Response Unit (IRU) is a charity dedicated to supporting victims of Islamophobia. It was founded in response to rising anti-Muslim attacks and the growing tide of anti-Muslim sentiment across the United Kingdom. This service is for anyone who suffers or has suffered an incident of hate crime or discrimination because of their Muslim faith (or perceived Muslim faith). Our work has also been supported by law firms across the City.

Over the years we have developed an understanding of our community and what it needs when it comes to supporting victims of Islamophobia. Our focus has always been to challenge Islamophobia and pave the legal avenues available to each client to tackle this injustice. The IRU serves four main functions:

  • Provision of free legal support;
  • Provision of basic emotional support;
  • Data collection and monitoring;
  • Referrals to partner agencies and signposting to other services.

What we are looking for:
We are seeking approximately 15 passionate individuals who are ready to make a difference and assist with casework at the IRU. Students will be supervised by qualified lawyers. Applicants in Year 2, 3, or 4 of the LLB or LLM students are eligible and encouraged to apply.

Time Commitment:
Time commitment can vary depending on the nature of cases, but students can expect to commit nearly 3-4 hours of time every two weeks.

Training and Qualification:
Applicants will undergo comprehensive induction training covering the areas of law involved in the advocacy, essentials such as safeguarding and GDPR, advocacy role play and multidisciplinary training from the other team members.

Successful applicants will also undergo comprehensive online training offered by the IRU. Once complete, attendees will be expected to complete an internal case study assessment at the end of the programme. The lecture topics include:
