Migration has become one of the defining issues of our generation. The current number of forcibly displaced persons in the world reaching is at its highest ever, constituting one of the largest and most vulnerable populations of the world today.
Throughout the entire migration journey - from origin to transit to destination and return - refugees often experience destabilising effects to their physical and mental well-being. They are often at high risk of suffering from gender-based trauma and long-term psychiatric symptoms even after resettlement, and yet lack access to affordable and effective healthcare. It is therefore of critical concern to governments, international organisations, and local communities how migration and healthcare policies and regulations can be reformed to better protect the health of refugees.
This panel event, held on World Human Rights Day, provides an opportunity for the audience to gain insight on the many challenges that refugees face in respect to gaining access to healthcare, the life-changing consequences these barriers bring, and what we as part of a global community can do to ensure a right to healthcare beyond borders.
Speakers include:
- Ayesha Christie, Immigration and Asylum Law Barrister at Matrix Chambers
- Dr Jane Hunt, Senior Medical Adviser at Helen Bamber Foundation
- Mr James Skinner, Nurse, campaigner and advocate at Medact
- Dr Rachel Bingham, Medical Doctor at Freedom from Torture and Clinical Advisor at Medical Justice
The event will be chaired by Dr Miriam Orcutt, the Coordinator of UCL-Lancet Commission on Migration and Health, and a Migration and Health Research Associate at the UCL Institute for Global Health.
