Dr Andrew Lemieux from the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement presented an eye-opening account of his work in Uganda, working with the Ugandan Safari Parks as they attempt to tackle the problem of poaching with minimal manpower and low-tech equipment. Andrew has recently introduced crime science principles into their effort, in particular using crime mapping techniques to try and determine where resources can best be allocated to deliver maximum effect. Andrew presented some grisly pictures of the effects of poachers’ crude, low-cost traps on elephants.
