Professor Smith was invited by SECReT students to present at a mini-conference organised by the students themselves, the UCL Security and Crime Science Research Network Conference. The theme of the event was ‘the most critical current global security challenges, and it is within this context that Professor Smith talked about the Pursue-Prevent-Protect-Prepare elements of the UKs Strategy for Countering International Terrorism, discussing the need to reduce the risk of threats and vulnerabilities, and how horizon scanning will be important to identify future threats.
He also discussed upcoming trends in an increasingly agile and innovative ‘technology arms race’, for example increased information exploitation, multi-sensor integration, and analysis in many dimensions.
