UCL SECReT Industry Evening 2011

Report and student presentations

The third industry evening of the Security Science Doctoral Research Training Centre took place at UCL in December 2011. Our third cohort of 15 doctoral students presented to an audience from a broad spectrum of industry, public- sector and academic organisations , including representatives from the Home Office, Selex, NPIA and the Met Police.

Students, working in teams, presented four crime and security scenarios and by way of these scenarios introduced themselves and their individual research interests – see below. After the presentations students networked with the attendees and practised the valuable (and often intimidating!) skill of ‘selling’ their research interest to individuals from the ‘real world’. Most of the students were able to do this successfully and received generous offers of project support from various agencies and organisations ranging from police forces through to industry organisations such as KPMG Forensic.

Scenario 1 - An Explosive Device at a Transport Hub

Scenario 2 - Smuggling Hortus gnombe at the Port of Felixstowe

Scenario 3 - Preparing For and Responding to Hurricane “Se”

Scenario 4 - Countering Cyber-Crime Following a Natural Disaster
