UCL Department of Security and Crime Science

Forensic science is a dynamic discipline that is increasingly providing solutions to many problems faced in the detection and countering of crime and terrorism.  It is inherently multidisciplinary and relates to all stages of the forensic science process from the crime scene, to the analysis of evidence, the interpretation of those results and their presentation to a court.

Forensic science is widely recognised to be critical to the efficiency and effectiveness of the criminal justice system, it is also acknowledged that there are significant areas of research and development that need to be addressed more fully to ensure that the forensic sciences are in the position to provide strategic solutions for the future of crime detection.

The research interests of the Forensic science group lie in exploring the philosophical approaches of forensic science and also in developing novel means of trace evidence analysis.  In particular, environmental evidence is a key area, specifically the potential for soils and sediments to provide useful intelligence and evidence in forensic investigations.
