Biography

London merchant, partner in Boddington & Davis (q.v.) with Samuel Boddington and Thomas Boddington (both of whom q.v.), and a major awardee of compensation in several colonies.  

  1. Thomas Boddington and Richard Davis were still active in 1853, when the two were fined after their ship, the Samuel Boddington, arrived at Georgetown British Guiana on 04/03/1853 from Amoy in China with 352 adult immigrants and 30 crew, 40 people over the legal limit.

  2. The will with a codicil of Richard Davis late of St Helens Place Bishopgate Street who died 13/11/1877 at Roselle Tunbridge Wells proved 31/12/1877 by Margaret Davis the widow of Heathlands Bournemouth, effects under £35,000.  The death of Richard Davis at Tunbridge Wells aged 68 was registered Q4 1877.

  3. In 1871, Richard Davis aged 62 West India merchant,underwriter and landowner born Fenchurch St. Middlesex was living at 1 Aberdeen Terrace Lewisham with wife Margaret aged 55 and daughter Sarah aged 23 born 'St Helens', son Robert 21 born Camberwell, daughter Harriet 19 born Camberwell and Marion 13 born Blackheath. In 1861 Richard Davis West India merchant 52 and Margaret were living with their family at St Mary Magdalen Hastings.   

  4. Charles Leicester Davis became a planter in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), being described after his death 09/01/1917 as late of New House Farm, Walton-on-the-Naze...and of Blinkbonnie Estate Dickoya in the Island of Ceylon.
