Biography

London merchant, son of Joseph Marryat the elder MP and brother of Joseph Marryat (q.v.) and Captain Frederick Marryat, and partner in Joseph Marryat & Co (q.v.), which was a major recipient of compensation especially in Trinidad and St Lucia.

  1. In 1851, Charles Marryat aged 48 West India merchant born Sydenham Kent was living with his wife Caroline aged 45 born Dawlish Devon and four daughters, Selina, Caroline, Gertrude and Ellen at Potters Barr South Mimms Hertfordshire. In 1871 he was shown as a widower aged 68 at 75 Eccleston Square with Gertrude and Emma; in 1881 he was again at 75 Eccelston Square with a wife, Catherine born Halifax Nova Scotia.

  2. Will of Charles Marryat of 6 Laurence Pountney Lane and 75 Eccleston Square who died 07/10/1884 proved 18/12/1884, personal estate £25060 15s 4d.

  3. Charles Marryat the son (1827-1906) became Archdeacon of Adelaide, having sailed from Britain in 1852. His sister Augusta married Sir Henry Young, Governor of South Australia.

  4. Gave evidence to the Select Committee on Sugar and Coffee Planting in 1848.
