The UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH) forms an integral part of the UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences (SLMS) at University College London (UCL). In addition, ICH maintains a particularly close relationship with Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust (GOSH).
These close links have enabled ICH to pursue medical research in the context of child health and disease, based upon an integrated approach of careful clinical observation and scientific investigation. This allows an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of disease and, in turn, leads to precise diagnosis and development of new therapies.
The Institute’s current academic structure consists of six Academic Programmes.
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, ICH was part of a UCL return in which 70% of staff were rated as of international quality.
Child Health Research PhD Programme
The Child Health Research Appeal Trust (CHRAT), a charity established to support the research of the Institute and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust, has established a programme of postgraduate research studentships tenable for three years. Typically, six new studentships are awarded annually. The maintenance grant is matched to the rates paid by the MRC and is tax free. In addition there is an annual sum to cover running costs of the research projects, and the Trust pays tuition fees at the UK/EU rate on behalf of the studentship holder. The scheme is advertised in early November each year and the closing date for applications is normally early January. Further details on the scheme and available projects can be found under ‘Current Full-time Funded PhD Studentships’ below during the period early November-end December.
