We are seeking applicants who hold a PhD in Modern European History. We welcome applications from historians working on aspects of modern European history (c.1750-1914) that will increase the department’s strength in this field. We are also interested in applicants working on Europe’s relationship with any region of the world (c.1750-1914), and/or modern European history (c.1750-1914) from comparative, transnational or global perspectives.

We are seeking applicants who hold a PhD in an area related to social and economic history since 1500. We welcome applications from historians who work on any aspect of social and economic history in the period since 1500, and whose expertise involves any region of the world, including those whose approaches are comparative, transnational or global. In line with our 2019 10-year strategy, the department is keen to encourage applicants with expertise relating to histories of environment, (in)equality and/or race and racialisation.

We are seeking applicants who hold a PhD in an area related to African history. We welcome applications from historians working on any aspect of African history whose research focuses primarily on African processes and institutions, and with a demonstrable ability to collect and analyse African sources for the study of African history in addition to colonial and European language sources. We welcome applications from historians working on any region of African history as well as from comparative, transnational or global perspectives.

We are seeking applicants who hold a PhD in an area related to modern East Asian history. We invite applications from historians working on any field of East Asian history during the eighteenth, nineteenth or twentieth centuries, but particularly welcome applications that complement the department’s existing strengths in economic and social history, histories of knowledge, and global and transnational history. In line with our 2019 ten-year strategy, the department is also keen to encourage applicants with expertise relating to histories of environment, (in)equality, and/or race and racialisation. We also welcome applications from scholars whose work seeks to reframe ‘East Asia’ as a geographic category and/or engages critically with the concept of modernity.

We are seeking applicants who hold a PhD in an area related to environmental history. We invite applications from historians working on environmental history between 1500CE and the present. We define environmental history widely to encompass the various relationships between humans and non-human phenomena. It could include climate history, histories of resource use and energy, histories of animal-human relations, chemical histories, oceanic histories, rural and urban histories, and histories of science and medicine. We welcome applicants working on environmental history in any geographical region or regions, and/or from comparative, transnational or global perspectives.
