Nahrein Network announces first Visiting Iraqi Scholarships

11 May 2018

Four candidates are named for the first scholarship round

The Nahrein Network and the British Institute for the Study of Iraq (BISI) are pleased to announce that four candidates have been awarded a scholarship to conduct research in the UK. The Visiting Iraqi Scholarship Scheme is one of the few opportunities available to Iraqi academics and practitioners in history, heritage and humanities to conduct research at a UK research host institution.

The successful candidates are:

  • Professor Nasser Jassem, the director of the University of Mosul's Orientalism Unit, who will be based at University College London;
  • The director of  Mosul University Libraries, Mr Mohammed Jasim Aal-Hajiahmed, to be hosted by the British Library;
  • Dr Rozhen Mohammed, an architect and urban planner and head of the Digital Cultural Heritage Research Group at Sulaimani Polytechnic University, who will collaborate with the EMOTIVE project at Glasgow University to develop research on a storytelling project for the Slemani Museum in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
  • Mr Ali al-Makhzomi, who runs the Bil Weekend tour group in Iraq, who plans to conduct research to develop a web-based application on tourism in Iraq.

The Nahrein-BISI Visiting Iraqi Scholarships Scheme aims to enhance the capacity of Iraqi researchers to participate in the rebuilding of the country. The scholarship opportunity enables academics, cultural heritage professionals, and NGO workers from Iraq to visit the UK for 1-2 months for training and research. It is a central component of the Nahrein Network, which works to build collaborative research capacity that fosters the sustainable development of history, heritage and the humanities in post-conflict Iraq and its neighbours. The Network is supported by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council's Global Challenges Research Fund.

The next deadline for Visiting Scholarship applications is 15th August 2018.
