Postgraduate Teaching Vacancies

Only available to UCL Chemistry Students - working a maximum of 20 hours per week. Work must not be carried out until we have seen and verified your Right to Work (i.e. passport). If you work before this, you will not be paid for any hours you did.

Postgraduate employment opportunities - Chemistry Department

You should not carry out any work until we have seen and verified your right to work, as any work carried out before this Right to Work check will not be paid for.

Applications are invited from postgraduate students who wish to be considered for the following post:

Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (Grade 6)
Payment will be at Grade 6 pt 21 on the UCL salary scale, which is currently £15.32 per hour (including London Allowance).
The postholder will be required to assist in the teaching of undergraduate chemistry, in teaching (remote and or face to face) and marking of laboratory scripts for undergraduate chemistry laboratories, in outreach and widening participation activities and other related duties including providing support to module teams to develop online learning materials and activities, under direction of the module lead.

Please note:  Undergraduate students who carry out ad-hoc duties, or demonstrating at Workshops or Open Days will be paid at Grade 5 pt 20, which is currently £14.94 per hour and this will be organised through UniTemps. Again, they must see your Right to Work first before any work is done. Please contact our Chemistry HR team for guidance (hr.chem@ucl.ac.uk)

Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Student Advisor is a new role in the Chemistry Department Student Lifecycle and Support Team and will contribute to the work of the Departmental Teaching Committee as well as work and conversations in the faculty. The purpose of this role is to support the wellbeing of Chemistry students and to enhance their experience throughout the entire university lifecycle from pre-arrival to graduation, by providing key administration and education support activities. This role will provide effective, professional guidance and signposting to students on a range of issues relating to welfare, health, and support for academic progression. This role does not directly itself provide specialist practitioner support or clinically qualified treatment. An important part of this work will be to support the processes around Extenuating Circumstances, as part of Chemistry’s Departmental Extenuating Circumstances Panel, and Summary of Reasonable Adjustments (SORAs), working with academic colleagues and in partnership with SSW to establish reasonable and effective methods of support or academic adjustments for students in situations of difficulty or with complex circumstances, and to signpost and recommend to both internal and external specialist services and treatment providers where necessary. The role holder will also advise or lead on best practices and innovations to enhance the wider student support network and to create a welcoming environment for students in the department.

 

Key Requirements

We are looking for an individual who has experience of working in student facing roles, and of providing wellbeing support, but also one that can collate and analyse data to help develop strategic ways to support our students better by contributing to conversations across the faculty. We aim to recruit a candidate who has a genuine interest in student welfare, and who will enjoy being part of a highly dynamic Teaching and Learning team. The post-holder will have a good general education to Honours degree level or the equivalent with substantial knowledge of the HE sector, in particular student services management and administration, both undergraduate and graduate and both UK and International. The post-holder will have experience of enhancing engagement through training, feedback and focus groups. The post-holder will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
