Cristian Triana received both the degrees of Chemical Engineer and MSc in
Chemical Engineering in Universidad Nacional de Colombia branch Manizales in
2008 and 2010, respectively. He has worked in the biotechnology field, mainly in
the ethanol production process from agro-industrial residues using microorganisms
capable of consuming hexoses and pentoses simultaneously, focusing on both experimental and simulation aspects.
Research project
Title: Operation and control of bioethanol production
Supervisors: Dr Eva Sorensen and Prof Eric Fraga
The high prices of fossil fuels and the enviromental damages they have caused,
have encouraged many researchers to find alternative solutions for energy
generation, focusing mainly in renewable resources such as urban solid
residues, wood, energy crops, grass, paper, agroindustry residues etc. Many
countries have invested a lot of time and money in the search for new routes of
production of high added value metabolites, such as for instance ethanol which is considered in this work.
This PhD project is directed to evaluate some of the most notorious problems in
the production of ethanol at industrial scale (e.g. yield, heat integration,
operating costs, residence time etc). This work will also consider the dynamics of
the process and the energy integration between the different stages, e.g. pretreatment,
enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation and product recovery. This is a relatively
"unknown" field since most of the current research is dedicated only to considering
the specific stages of the entire process and not the overall plant.
