Chandni Patel graduated in 2007 with a Bachelors Degree in Forensic Science from University of Westminster. During her undergraduate course she had undertaken additional courses on cell culture and renewable energy prospects and became increasingly interested in Chemical Engineering and renewable energy, and therefore decided to broaden her interest through her PhD which focuses on the production of energy from various types of biomass using combustion technology and their environmental impact assessment. Her work is undertaken in collaboration with an industrial engineering consulting company (Germanà & Partners Consulting Engineers) based in Rome, Italy.
Research project
Title: Techno-economic analysis and environmental impact assessment of biomass combustion for energy production
Supervisor: Dr Paola Lettieri
The research examines
human contribution to global warming through energy production, and investigates
alternative technologies of sourcing our future energy needs. Renewable sources
such as waste wood chips, solid recovered fuel, and rapeseed oil are considered
in because we have a good under utilized supply. A techno-economic assessment
is performed on small to medium scale combustion plants utilizing the above
biomass sources.
In order to fully understand the environmental burden of such feeds and processes, a life cycle assessment (LCA) is necessary. The LCA study carried out in the project was formulated to ensure complete transparency. Our future energy needs will be satisfied by a variety of sources all of which however need to undergo studies and investigations as performed in this PhD in order to fully understand their environmental burden and source investors.
