Paul Greening

I have been lecturer in structures at UCL since July 2001. Prior to this I worked for several years developing an advanced geotechnical testing laboratory in the department of civil engineering at the University of Bristol. For three years before that I operated Bristol's earthquake simulator.

My PhD was completed in 1999 under the supervision of Prof Nick Lieven of the aerospace engineering department at Bristol. The research studied the sensitivity of measured structural dynamic data to loading and deformity. More specifically I demonstrated that the effects of loading are a threat to the likely success of model updating techniques. In response to this observation, I developed updating parameters which account for loading effects. I graduated with a BEng in civil engineering from Bristol in 1994.

I am a graduate member of the ICE, vice chairman of SECED (and webmaster) and a member of EEFIT under the auspices of which I visited Turkey after the Kocaeli earthquake of 17th August 1999 and Gujarat after the 26th January 2001 earthquake.I am also a committee member of SIMoNET (Structural Integrity Monitoring Network) which is co-ordinated from the department of mechanical engineering at UCL.

I am warden of Langton Close and Frances Gardner Halls of Residence.

Research Interests

I have a inherited an interest from the geomechanics group at Bristol in using bender elements to determine the small strain shear stiffness of soil. I am supervising an EPSRC funded programme of research with Cambridge Insitu Ltd. to develop an objective and automatic method of processing the raw experimental results. A new system, provisionally named ABETS, for taking measurements using bender elements has been developed at UCL. Data collection is carried out using a PICO dual channel oscilloscope unit (either ADC212 or ADC216). The rest of the system is PC-based. A transmitted signal is generated via a built-in soundcard. Control of the aquisition unit, data processing and storage is performed in a spreadsheet. More information and downloads are available here.

I am interested in experimental modal analysis and dynamic FE modelling of civil engineering structures. I have several undergraduate research students working on a scale model of the recently opened millenium bridge.

I am investigating how structural identification techniques can be implemented with a new breed of accelerometers based on MEMS technology. These transducers are very cheap and require little power opening the prospect that they might be built routinely into new civil engineering infrastructure allowing feedback about the state of health to be monitored continuously.

Teaching

In the academic year 2003/2004 I am responsible for the following courses:

CIVLE201 Structural mechanics (year 1)
CIVLE222 Design and Analysis of skeletal structures (year 3)

I also contribute to the measurement and computation course

CIVLE232 Measurement and computation (year 1)

Notes on using an ACER Tablet PC for lecturing.
