Project Title

Hyperspectral Imaging for Heritage: From Books to Bricks

Background & Summary of Project

Ian (MChem) is investigating the use of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in a heritage context and will show how HSI fits into the available suite of non-destructive tests to help the cultural heritage industry care for collections and learn about the object history through the detection and identification of pigmentation.

An initial study (now published) investigated the ability of HSI to identify pigments in a collection of Armenian manuscripts, and a second project is being carried out on a large Egyptian shrine to map faded pigment in an effort to recreate the original look of the shrine.
