Jan Abram

Jan Abram

Jan Abram PhD is a Training Analyst and Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society in full time private practice in London. She is Visiting Professor of the Psychoanalysis Unit, University College London and Course Co-ordinator for the Winnicott Unit and Contemporary Clinical Theory for the MSc in Theoretical Psychoanalytic Studies.

Her current professional posts include: Chair of the Archives Committee, British Psychoanalytical Society; Progress Advisor for the Student Progress Committee, British Psychoanalytical Society; Visiting Lecturer, Adult Department, The Tavistock Clinic; Member of the Board of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis; and Chair of the 'Paris Group', a Research Group on the Specificity of Psychoanalytic Treatment Through Inter-Analytic Group Work of the European Psychoanalytic Federation.

Between 1989 and 2000 Jan Abram worked for the Squiggle Foundation (an organisation dedicated to the dissemination of D.W.Winnicott's work), as a teacher/lecturer and served a four-year term as director (1996 - 2000). During this time she published her first book - Psychotherapy Trainings: A Guide in 1992. Her second book The Language of Winnicott: A Dictionary of Winnicott's Use of Words (1996) was awarded Outstanding Academic Book of the Year in 1997. In 2000 she edited a collection of lectures by André Green to Squiggle audiences - André Green at the Squiggle  Foundation (2nd Edition 2016). The second edition of The Language of Winnicott was published in 2007 and in 2013 Jan Abram published Donald Winnicott Today for the New Library of Psychoanalysis.

Recently Jan Abram was Visiting Professor for the Graduate School of Education, University of Kyoto, Japan, where she lectured and supervised. The second edition of André Green at the Squiggle Foundation is now being translated into Japanese for publication in 2017.

Jan Abram's clinical research activities include her participation in the work of The Paris Group - The Specificity of Psychoanalytic Treatment Through Inter-Analytic Group Work for the European Psychoanalytic Federation. The aim of this working party is to develop and refine a methodology to examine the specificity of psychoanalysis as a treatment through inter-analytic group work.

Jan Abram is presently preparing a selection of her publications - The Surviving Object: Psychoanalytic Essays on Psychic Survival . She is also co-authoring a book with R.D. Hinshelwood entitled, Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott: An Introductory Comparative Conceptual Study.
