Technology in dementia: Innovating or isolating?

The number of people living with dementia worldwide is forecast to grow from 50 to 130 million by 2050. There are currently no disease modifying treatments available and dementia poses an enormous challenge for society. Could technology provide solutions? Technological approaches have been suggested to help diagnosis and assessment, assist independent living, compensate for some memory and functional difficulties, and provide safe and effective care.

But is this a reality - or has the potential for technology been overstated? What is the current evidence for using assistive technology for dementia, and what are the ethical issues? Is there a risk that technology could replace much-needed human contact, leading to increased isolation?

Join the public discussion in Mental Health Question Time on Monday 29th October as we bring together, in collaboration with the Economic and Social Research Council, a diverse international panel of clinicians, carers, engineers, and sociologists to discuss the potential for technology to transform dementia care.
