Anthropology

Anthropology

What distinguishes our degrees from other anthropology degrees in the UK is its intellectual breadth, bringing together Biological Anthropology, Social Anthropology, Material Culture and Medical Anthropology under a single programme of study. You will also be studying at one of the world’s top departments for the subject (ranked 4th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020).

During your studies you can learn practically by engaging with objects, photographs and films in the UCL Ethnography Collections, hominin and primate specimens in the Biological Anthropology Collection as well as writing for our in-house print magazine and student-run blog, the Anthropolitan.

Archaeology is a discipline researching around 4 million years* of the human record. From human made artefacts to biological specimens including bones, beetles and botany.  Archaeology is never dull, it is always changing and your degree would reflect this.  You would be at the cutting edge of Archaeological research, spanning the arts, humanities and sciences with a world leading team of academics, researchers and students.  Undertaking fieldwork, working with museums, heritage bodies and partner institutions, the UCL IoA is unrivalled in its global reach. *As this changes so then does our research! Arts and Sciences

Arts and Sciences
The Bachelor in Arts and Sciences (BASc) gives you the opportunity to create your own bespoke programme incorporating both humanities, social sciences and sciences subjects. You will be able to study an innovative core that links between disciplines as well as specialist modules in each discipline. You will study modules across the breadth of UCL's world class expertise and achieve a depth of knowledge needed to thrive in our global society. We offer four pathways in Societies, Cultures, Health and Environment and Science and Engineering, one of which students on the degree have as their major and a contrasting one as their minor. You will be taught be UCL's excellent staff from a wide range of Departments and will have specialist teaching from our arts and sciences teachers. You will also study a modern foreign language throughout your degree, have the opportunity to study abroad for a year and have dedicated support from our BASc Careers Advisor based in UCL Careers to help you find an internship at the end of your second year.

Biological Sciences

Biological Sciences is at the centre of UCL’s world leading research on biodiversity and environmental science as well as human genetics, healthy ageing and many more. Many current research experts from UCL and our partner institutes are actively involved in the teaching of the BSc and MSci in Biological Sciences. Our staff have included Nobel Prize Winners, including 2014 winner and current staff member, John O’Keefe. Biomedical Sciences
UCL is internationally recognised for biomedical research. Students learn from experts who are currently conducting world-leading research in these specialist areas, and will also discover how the subjects overlap and interact. Our foundational first year ensures all students receive a strong grounding in scientific disciplines as well the opportunity to explore multiple areas of science. This enables students to make an informed decision as to whether they would like to specialise, and if so, in which area. Biomedical Sciences provides an opportunity to study a variety of scientific disciplines including anatomy, cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, immunology and infection, neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology, and psychology. Human Sciences

UCL BSc Human Sciences offers more choice and flexibility than any other similar programme for independent and confident thinkers who not only love science but also have broader interests. The programme offers a wide choice of individual module combinations from life sciences, social and historical sciences and physical sciences. In Years 2 and 3, students have the opportunity to choose from all modules across UCL providing them with a chance to study additional areas of interest and support is provided on structuring your programme. Students have the opportunity to study abroad in Year 3 at some of the world’s most prestigious universities. Security and Crime Science

Security and Crime Science

The UCL Jill Dando Institute of Security and Crime Science focuses on research that is applied. We work closely with police and government partners around the world to ensure that our research is actively used to prevent, reduce and detect crime in better ways by bringing together a range of scientific disciplines. Because of this in the last Research Excellence Framework exercise we were rated world-leading in terms of impact, placing us joint 1st in the country. Our current undergrad programmes are a BSc in Security and Crime Science and a BSc in Professional Policing. These programmes cross-over well with many courses at UCL, including degrees in psychology, law, security, political science, mapping, computer science, cybercrime, artificial intelligence and machine learning, disaster reduction, medical physics (scanning technology) and a range of social sciences.
