Ancient Egyptian glass belongs to the finest of the ancient world. Glass appears sporadically before the 18th Dynasty (about 1550 - 1292 BC), but appears then quite often as a luxury material. The earliest glass is already made with a high technological competence. Therefore it is most probable that the knowledge of glass making was introduced from the Near East. Glass was a highly favoured luxury material in the New Kingdom (about 1550 - 1069 BC), but then was only produced in small quantities until about 400 BC. Glass again became popular among the rich in Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt.
