LOD/1 - Papers relating to OL's anthropological and demographics research in Bulgaria and Yugoslavia (1919-1953)

OL visited Bulgaria and Yugoslavia to undertake demographic and anthropological research in the inter war period. She was funded by research fellowships from SSEES and Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.

Contents: papers re OL's demographic and anthropological research in Bulgaria and Yugoslavia (and a small amount in France) particularly her study of fire dances, spring rituals and other folk traditions. Also includes her notebooks and family trees containing demographic data collected on Bulgarian and Yugoslavian families.

Publication: a number of publications resulted from OL's interwar research in Bulgaria and Yugoslavia including a series of articles entitled "Sociobiological studies in the Balkans" in "Population: Journal of the International Union for the Scientific Investigation of Population Problems" (Vol 1, no 2, February 1934; Vol. 1, no 3, November 1934; Vol. 2, no 1, November 1935; Vol. 2, no 3, December 1937) and a volume "Peasant life in Yugoslavia" (London, 1942)

LOD/2 - Writings, correspondence, notes, pamphlets and press cuttings re WWII and post war Yugoslavia (1930-1956, mainly 1941-1953)

OL gave a number of broadcasts on Yugoslavia during the Second World War and was offered employment by both the BBC and Foreign Office as a Yugoslav expert, although it is not clear whether she accepted these offers. She did give many lectures on Yugoslavia during the war to a variety of audiences to raise funds for the Yugoslav Relief Society of which she was a committee member. After the war in 1952 OL revisited Yugoslavia to study the survival of folk customs.

Contents: writings, correspondence, notes, pamphlets and press cuttings, and a few photographs re Yugoslavia mainly during the Second World War and immediate post war period
