IVA/1 - IG's papers re Lajos Kossuth (circa) (1939-1965) (circa)

Although IG was more deeply involved in the study of Széchenyi he also undertook some research into Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894). He was sent to Britain in 1939 to research the activities of exiles from the 1848-1849 Hungarian War of Independence in Britain which included Kossuth. Later during his own exile in Britain IG planned and partially wrote a monograph on Kossuth and his circle in exile which was never finished.

IVA/2 - IG's papers re Count István Széchenyi (circa) (1936-1965) (circa)

IG spent much of his academic life in the study of Count István Széchenyi. His doctoral thesis was on the economic reforms proposed by Széchenyi and he made his name as a historian with his edition of Széchenyi's work "Hitel" ("Credit"). In exile he worked on a biography of Széchenyi which was never published.

Contents: typescript manuscripts of biography of Széchenyi, notes re Széchenyi's Anglo-Hungarian literary connections and other notes and typescripts re Széchenyi.

IVA/3 - IG's writings, correspondence and other papers re nineteenth and twentieth century Hungarian history and current affairs (circa) (1939-1965) (circa)

In exile IG maintained a close interest and involvement with Hungarian affairs. During the Second World War he was a member of the Hungarian National Council in England under the leadership of Count Mihály Károlyi. IG contributed to the BBC's Hungarian broadcasts and was lecturer in Hungarian at SSEES from 1947 until his death. He published a number of articles on Hungarian history and affairs and planned a work on the role of Hungarian intellectuals in Hungarian national life 1790-1956 which was never completed.

IVA/4 - IG's writings and other papers re eighteenth and nineteenth century British history (circa) (1939-1965) (circa)

Although his academic speciality was Hungarian history IG had an interest in British history and in particular dissenters in eighteenth century England. He became an expert on British pamphlets of the eighteenth and nineteenth century and collected many pamphlets himself.

Contents: card index of British pamphlets and typescripts and notes re British history in particular eighteenth century dissenters.

IVA/5 - IG's writings and other papers re European history (circa) (1939-1965) (circa)

In 1934 IG published a volume "Egyetemes Történet" ("General History") on European developments since the French Revolution. This was was the fourth volume of an Hungarian official series of a world history. This class contains what is presumably a revised English translation of the earlier work.

Contents: draft typescript re nineteenth century European history and other typescripts and manuscripts re nineteenth century European history.
