1680s country house, ascribed 'possibly' to Wren, built by William Freeman on the site of an old manor house on the estate he had purchased at Fawley. Freeman's nephew and heir to his English estates John Freeman formerly Cooke developed the pleasure gardens, and John Freeman's son Sambrooke Freeman remodelled the house and significantly altered the grounds using Capability Brown.
