Biography

The will of Matthew Herbert Esquire of St David was proved in Jamaica, 03/06/1773. In it be bequeathed some enslaved people and £200 Jamaican currency to two "mulatto" boys, Matthew Herbert and James Herbert (sons of Diana Crosse, "free negro", formerly his housekeeper). They were also to live on his estate until they reached the age of 21 years and to be maintained by a trust.
