John Monteath

1770 - 1815


Biography

Resident slave-owner in Jamaica, from a Scottish family. His father Walter Monteath of Kep was bankrupt in 1785 and his estate sequestrated. John Monteath bought Aniaso, later baptised Archibald John Monteath, c. 1802: a narrative of the life of Archibald John Monteath has been reconstructed by by Maureen Warner-Lewis.
