Biography

Merchant in St Kitts, then in Tobago, partner with William Brown, John Young and Alexander Brown, and an early purchaser of land on Tobago. J. Macnae and J. Young purchased Courland Bay division (St David parish) Lot No. 3 (300 acres) on 12/05/1766, which became Mary's Hill; in 1773, the Lot was shown against 'J. Macnae & Co.'

David Dobson Directory of Scottish settlers in North America Volume VI (Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1986), p. 126: Tran, Hugh Certificate that on 23 December 1771 Hugh Tran registered and deposited in the Registry Office of Grenada a bond from John Young, Alexander Brown and John McNae, the surviving partners of William Brown to Robert Bogle Sr, Thomas Bogle Jr and William Scott, dated 8 August 1769 in St Kitts, and the said bond was destroyed by fire in Georgetown on 27 December 1771. Certificate signed by James Gillock, registrar, 31 March 1772. (RD2.224/2.650); Young, John Late in Tobago, now a merchant in Glasgow, partner of John McNeil [sic], merchant in Tobago, and his attorney, acknowledged a debt due to Robert Bogle and William Scott of Lovelane, Loudoun, merchants. Subscribed in Glasgow on 4 September 1771. Witnesses John Marshall, writer in Glasgow, and Thomas Buchanan. (RD2.224/2.646).

Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society Vols. 12-14 (1944) p. 32 shows the partners with John Macnae in St Kitts in 1765 as John Young, William Brown and Archibald Hendry.
