John Goodson

Claimant or beneficiary

London merchant, awarded the compensation for the enslaved people on Boccage, Madey and Boulgone estates on Grenada as mortgagee-in-possession. The contested background to his involvement in these estates was given in the case of 'Ellice v Goodson' in 1838: the executors of James Law had after his death in 1807 created encumbrances on his estates in England, Ireland and the West Indies in favour of Goodson (the consignee) and Sir William Young, which were challenged.

  1. Identified as of Great Winchester Street in the compensation records. The same John Goodson shown in the London trade directories for Great Winchester Street appears later as of Union Buildings Old Broad Street. This was possibly the John Goodson of Bartlett Buildings Holborn whose will (made in 1830) was proved 10/7/1849 and who was buried at All Souls Kensal Green 15/01/1849 aged 86, although the will refers to a range of real estate in England (including at Carshalton) but not apparently to any West Indian property. John Goodson's firm was still listed in 1850 at Union Buildings, and the will does refer to property on the east side of Old Broad Street. The main beneficiary of the will was Thomas Goodson, then (in 1830) at Worcester College, Oxford [and the son of Thomas Goodson of Baltonsbury or Baltonsborough, Somerset]: this Thomas Goodson the Oxford student died in 1893 of 2 Albany Piccadilly and Carshalton Surrey leaving £324,476 10s 7d. In 1841 John Goodson merchant aged 75 was at Hill House Carshalton with Mary Dumont aged 70, Ellen [?]  Dumont and two servants.  Hill House Bishopsford Road is a Grade II listed early to mid-19th century classical style house.
