The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:

  • SD - Association Start Date
  • SY - Association Start Year
  • EA - Earliest Known Association
  • ED - Association End Date
  • EY - Association End Year
  • LA - Latest Known Association
1817 [EA] - 1823 [LA] → Owner
1825 [EA] - 1831 [LA] → Not known

Possibly manager, possibly lessee of enslaved people working on this estate. It's not clear if he sold the land when he sold the enslaved people.

1826 [EA] - → Other

Purchaser of enslaved people on this estate.

1832 [EA] - → Not known

Possibly owner of the land and the enslaved people, although the enslaved people may have mostly worked on Bellfield.

Notes

Benjamin Haynes owned this estate with a group of enslaved people from at least 1817 to 1823. By 1826 he had sold the enslaved people to Isabella Rome but he is still registered to the estate in the almanacs, suggesting he continued to own the land with leased enslaved people working upon it. However, the fact that St Helena is registered to Isabella Rome in the almanac of 1833 suggests she bought the land as well as the enslaved people.
