Notes

A sugar estate in St Ann. Owned by Gresham Ely in 1737 when he mortgaged it to Kingston merchants. The debts on the estate mounted until Ely sold the estate to Philip Pinnock in 1747. By the time Pinnock conveyed the estate to William Gray in 1775 the estate was indebted to Kingston and London merchants (including William Gray) and between £50k and £100k of debt had been secured on it. Gray split the estate into two separate sugar concerns, Richmond Old Works and Richmond New Works. The estate went into receivership in 1784 and then passed into the hands of Jacob Isaac Bernal. It was inherited by Bernal's son Ralph Bernal in 1811 and was still owned by him in 1834.

A set of deeds for Richmond is transcribed at Vere Langford Oliver, Caribbeana being miscellaneous papers relating to the history, genealogy, topography, and antiquities of the British West Indies (6 vols., London, Mitchell, Hughes and Clarke, 1910-1919) vol. 3 pp. 155-160.
