IOE Director visits alumni in trip to China

20 December 2017

UCL Institute of Education (IOE) director Professor Becky Francis has travelled to China to celebrate the achievements of IOE alumni.

Becky Francis - Yidan Prize ceremony

Professor Francis began her trip by delivering a lecture 'Dilemmas of educational policy on teaching' to IOE alumni, current students and education professionals at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, before attending a dinner with IOE alumni. The dinner was hosted by alumna Dr Cynthia Lee, Associate Professor, the University of Hong Kong.

The trip also included the Yidan Prize Award Presentation Ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The awards recognise individuals whose work transforms education in innovative ways that can be scaled and adopted around the world, with a goal of providing access to quality education for all.

Prof Carol Dweck (Stanford) was honoured with the Yidan Prize for Education Research for her research on the power of "growth mindset" at the ceremony.

Professor Francis also attended at the 12th Global Confucius Institute Conference in Xi'an, China. The IOE was well-represented at the event with members of the Confucius Institute for Schools in attendance, including Professor Katharine Carruthers, Pro-Vice-Provost (East Asia) and Director of the IOE's Confucius Institute for Schools.

The conference was attended by nearly 2,500 people and sought to enhance the cooperation between Chinese companies and other international organisations on ways to participate in Chinese development through the Confucius Institute.

Finham Park School, Coventry, one of the schools taking part in the Confucius Institute for Schools' Mandarin Excellence Programme won the Global Confucius Classroom of the Year title in recognition of its development of Mandarin teaching and links with sister schools in Shanghai.
