IOE director delivers talks in visit to Harvard University
15 October 2018
UCL Institute of Education (IOE) Director Professor Becky Francis has visited Harvard University to meet students and deliver a seminar talk as the inaugural Chen Yidan Visiting Global Fellow.
The visit is part of the Chen Yidan Visiting Global Fellows programme which aims to bring a diverse group of international leaders and scholars from a variety of sectors and regions together. It is hoped that this will generate valuable opportunities for the global exchange of ideas on education and for deeper learning about many specific regions and contexts for education across the world.
Professor Francis has previously attended the Yidan Prize Award Presentation Ceremony as part of a trip to China in late 2017, during which she also visited IOE alumni.
As part of the visit, Professor Francis delivered a talk which explored whether policies that focus on education alone can be productive in promoting equity, or whether policy needs to focus on other factors. Drawing on the case of education policy in the UK and elsewhere, the event analysed the ways in which international policymakers have approached these challenges, with a particular emphasis on a social justice perspective.
In addition to her talk, Professor Francis met students in a networking event during which she gave a brief overview of her career path and what it is like to balance research and policy in higher education.
