Professor Becky Francis

Chief Executive Officer of the Education Endowment Foundation

Becky Francis

Professor Becky Francis served as Director of the UCL Institute of Education (IOE) from 2016 to January 2020. She joined the IOE from King's College London, where she was Professor of Education and Social Justice. Her previous roles include Director of Education at the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).

Becky has combined academic research and policy work in education throughout her career. She regularly serves as a consultant to the UK government and international agencies on education policy matters, and previously served as Standing Advisor to the UK Parliamentary committee responsible for scrutinising government policy on education. Becky's academic expertise and extensive publications centre on social identities (gender, 'race' and social class) and inequalities in educational contexts. She is a frequent media commentator on education issues.

Her policy research and analysis has focused on school quality and social class. She has spearheaded longstanding research programmes on major reforms in the English schools system and their impact on educational inequalities - in particular, the policy of academisation. She is currently directing the Education Endowment Foundation-funded project 'Best Practice in Grouping Students', a large mixed methods study in English secondary schools, investigating the practice of grouping pupils by attainment and how this relates to social inequality.
