This twilight short course will focus on supporting pupils with EAL in the mainstream primary classroom.

Who this course is for

This course is ideal for primary class teachers as well as inclusion leaders who work with EAL pupils. The course is suitable for NQTs.

Course content

  • Welcome and Induction of newly arrived pupils and their parents and carers.
  • Supporting refugee pupils and their families.
  • Developing language for learning across the curriculum.
  • Assessment of EAL pupils.

Learning outcomes

You will gain an improved knowledge and understanding of strategies that will support the learning of pupils with EAL across the primary curriculum as well as a better understanding of possible barriers faced by pupils with EAL. You will learn how to:

  • implement effective procedures for the welcome and induction of newly-arrived pupils
  • begin to plan appropriate activities for pupils with EAL
  • develop effective partnerships with parents and carers.

Course structure

The course will comprise a lecture and presentation together with practical planning activities.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course but it is assumed that you will be working either as a class teacher in a primary school or as an inclusion leader.


You will receive a certificate of attendance for completing the course.


£60 per participant.

Karen is a lecturer on the Primary PGCE Programme at UCL Institute of Education and has experience as an advisor on EAL & Refugee pupils with Wandsworth LA as well as being a primary classroom teacher.
