Care and Adolescence in East and Southern Africa: Aligning what we know about roles and reciprocity with understandings of `parenting support'
Parenting support has become a popular mechanism through which governments and civil society aim to bolster care within families and reduce adolescent risk. This paper draws on recent work with UNICEF Office of Research to understand both ideals and practices that shape the positions and expectations of adolescents, and of those who see themselves as their carers, in six countries in sub-Saharan Africa. It highlights factors that influence inter-generational relationships and the transition to adulthood and/or an expanded caring role.
