The IAS and the SSEES Mellon Programme are delighted to be co-hosting this reception to mark the Institute of Advanced Studies 'Area Studies Re-Mapped' agenda, which will be held at the end of the first day of this two-day conference.  Please register here.

The conference gathers together scholars working on a range of geographical 'areas' to discuss the contemporary state of Area Studies, the challenges and opportunities facing it, and to develop an agenda for future development. It will reconsider the intellectual foundations of Area Studies; articulate standards of excellence across research, teaching, and public policy; and assess the institutional forms best suited to fostering excellence, innovation, and impact.  The first day will be a survey of the state of Area Studies in general; the second day focuses on Eastern Europe from a transnational perspective.
