Dr Thomas Cowan is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Bergen. Thomas previously taught in the Geography and Environment department at London School of Economics and Political Science and completed a PhD in Urban Geography from King’s College London in 2017.

During his time at the IAS, Thomas will be working on his current project, “Subaltern frontiers: producing land in Delhi’s peripheries”. The project looks to develop his PhD thesis on land and labour politics in the “private city” of Gurgaon, India, by examining the role of colonial land settlement technologies and contemporary land governance models in shaping contemporary real estate development in the city. Thomas has recently returned from six months of ethnographic fieldwork in Gurgaon’s patwari [land records] office and will be working with the colonial archive in the British Library.
