Rebekah will discuss the insights that archaeology can provide into the roles of food and alcohol in ancient Israelite households, particularly in the sphere of ritual. Common conceptions of the roles of beer, honey, pigs, birds and dairy products will be re-examined and contextualised.

Dr Rebekah Welton works as an Area Supervisor on the Mount Zion excavation in Jerusalem, directed by Prof. Shimon Gibson, supported by two AIAS student grants. Her PhD from the University of Exeter was in Theology and Religious Sudies, and her thesis is titled 'A Glutton and a Drunkard': Excessive and 'Deviant' Consumption of Food and Alcohol in the Hebrew Bible in relation to the Law of the Rebellious Son (Deuteronomy 21:18-21).
