Until the mid-20th century, Simon Bar Kokhba was a somewhat shadowy figure in Jewish history, known only from a few legendary snippets in rabbinical literature, scattered references in the classical literature and ancient coins displaying the name "Shim'on". Then, in the quest for Dead Sea scrolls, caches of correspondence associated with Bar Kokhba were found, which shed light on the 3½-year Jewish rebellion led by Bar Kokhba against Roman rule of Judaea almost 2,000 years ago. In this lecture, the coins issued by the insurgents are reappraised, elucidating the meanings of their various motifs, thereby revealing features of the ideology promoted by Bar Kokhba and key information about the course of the revolt.

David M. Jacobson is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at UCL. He has written widely on different aspects of the history of the ancient Land of Israel, in particular on the art and architecture and the numismatics of that region. David has been active in the Palestine Exploration Fund, most recently as Editor of its flagship journal, PEQ, and in the Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society.  Ongoing research includes studies of the motifs on ancient Jewish coins, and 2015 saw the publication of Antioch and Jerusalem: The Seleucids and Maccabees in Coins, published by Spink.
