A historian of Europe with wide ranging interests, she was educated at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, gained her doctorate at the University of Cambridge and was later awarded a research fellowship and a post-doctoral research fellowship at Girton College. Her research has ranged across the period 1100-1600, through the exploration of themes in the religious culture of Europe. In all her work she seeks to understand issues of identity, community, and gender, the boundaries of cooperation and the threat of violence.
