SLAFCO2 Conference, Yaoundé, Cameroon, April 2022

AFRAB’s second workshop took place in the framework of the important Slafco2 Conference “Slavery in Africa: Knowledge & Openings” hosted by the Université de Yaoundé 1, in Cameroon on 19-21 Apr 2022.

The AFRAB Project contributed to the organisation and funding of the international Slafco2 conference held at Université de Yaoundé 1, in Cameroon, by organising a stream entitled “African Legal Abolitions: Rethinking Actors, Chronologies, and Frameworks”. The stream focused on the ideas and actions of African rulers, politicians, intellectuals, legal and religious specialists, free commoners and enslaved persons in relation to the legal abolition of slavery in their countries and regions. The stream consisted of the following panels: Panel 1, ‘African abolitionisms and approaches to ending slavery’, Panel 4, ‘African Legal Abolitions of the 19th Century’, and Panel 7, ‘European Legal Abolitions and African Strategies’. In addition, the AFRAB project sponsored a separate panel – Panel 10 for the conference entitled ‘Postcolonial Legal Abolitions: Achievements and Challenges’. Presenters for AFRAB (in order of presentation) included: Professor Emmanuel Saboro, Professor Samuel A. Nyanchoga, Professor Yonas Ashine, Professor Ismael M. Montana, Dr Michelle Liebst, Dr Takele Merid & Dr Alexander Meckelburg, Dr Cheikh Sene, Professor Olutayo C. Adesina, Dr Michael Odijie, Dr Salvatory S. Nyanto, Professor Ahmed Hassen, and Dr Oumarou Moussa. Panels were chaired by: Dr Benedetta Rossi, Ms Ruth Abeduwah Quansah, Dr Monsuru Muritala, and Ms Uzoamaka Nwachukwu. Dr Benedetta Rossi also chaired Panel 13 of the conference entitled ‘Upcoming Research’.
