One Major Language

Year One

  • 60 credits in language modules and content modules relevant to your major language.
  • 30 credits Introduction to History, Law, Philosophy and Politics.
  • 30 credits of modules in a humanities or social sciences subject, or in a minor language.

If you are taking the full Economics specialism you will take 45 credits of modules in the Economics department and 45 credits in language and content modules relevant to your major language.

Year Two

  • 45 credits in language modules and content modules relevant to your major language. For students taking French or Spanish as a major language, this can include a 15 credit ELCS optional module in the School of European Languages, Culture & Society.
  • 75 credits in your chosen area of specialisation.

Year Three

Year Abroad

Final Year

  • 30 credits in language modules and content modules relevant to your major language.
  • 30 credits Dissertation, normally in the region of your specialisation.
  • 60 credits in your chosen area of specialisation.

Notes:

  • An A grade at A level (or equivalent qualification) in the appropriate language is required for students wishing to major in French, or Spanish.
  • Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese and Mandarin are offered as major languages with no prior knowledge.
  • Arabic can only be taken ab initio if taken as the major language.

Mandarin

*Students with previous experience in Mandarin will have their language level tested and will take a language module that is appropriate to their level.

Japanese

  • HEBR0005 Modern Hebrew for Beginners (30 credits) - for ab initio students*
  • HEBR0007 Sources, Methods, and Skills in Jewish Studies (15 credits)
  • Additional modules to the value of 15 credits from the following:
  • HEBR0015 Introduction to Israeli Culture, Society and Politics (15 credits)
  • HEBR0011 Survey of Jewish History 1: The Ancient and Medieval Near East (15 credits)
  • HEBR0012 Survey of Jewish History 2: From Medieval to Early Modern Europe (15 credits)
  • HEBR0013 Survey of Jewish History 3: The Modern World (15 credits)

*Students with previous experience in Hebrew will have their language level tested and will take a language module that is appropriate to their level.

French

  • FREN0002 - Use of French (15 credits)
  • FREN0065 - French Oral (15 credits)*
  • FREN0005 - The Making of Modern France (15 credits)
  • FREN0006 - French Literature in Contexts (15 credits)

*Francophone students may not take FREN0065.

Spanish

  • SPAN0001 - Spanish Language I (30 credits)
  • Content modules relevant to the major language (30 credits)
